Biting the Apple is designed to provide a venue for artists and audiences to explore and broaden the dialog on the controversial, ever-evolving role of erotica in human culture. This year’s theme is Eros in Time: History of Erotica, a creative investigation of eroticism in art throughout the ages. Few themes are as pervasive and relevant as the role of erotica, especially when social perceptions of what is erotic, what is obscene, and what is art fluctuate radically. Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus, and Bronzino’s Venus, Cupid, Folly and Time generated social controversy in the 15th century just as Mapplethorpe’s and Koons’ photographs did in the 20th. Art history boasts a proud tradition of challenging social boundaries and many masterpieces were initially considered degenerate and obscene.
