Artist Statement
In my recent work, I appropriate images which science has made available to us such as microscopic organisms, macrocosmic systems and naturally occurring mathematical patterns in order to reclaim them as paintings which seek to express an aspect of being that science generally dismisses as fantasy - the human spirit. In this respect it is my intent to integrate the aims of art and science into the possibility of expanded self awareness. I juxtapose images of the microcosm with those of the macrocosm in order to explore the concept of infinity in reference to the elusive ‘grand unified theory’ of physics and the certainty that it exists and may be staring us in the face while we are yet unable to grasp it. I suggest that the principles which will someday unite dissonant theories in physics and our understanding of the universe may be so obvious as to be imperceptible: analogous to water being imperceptible to the fish that swims in it. I paint on transparent supports such as acrylic sheet which allows me to achieve striking visual effects and layer images that interact visually yet are separated by the physical barrier of the support material. This serves to address remote symbiotic relationships and the transmission of information through and across apparent physical barriers. Transparent supports also allow me to construct paintings on the back side of the support material and in reverse chronological order. This alludes to a mirrored reality, echo and duality as displayed by particle/anti-particle pairs. By combining conceptual intent with formal aesthetics, I seek to create a framework upon which the viewer constructs meaning pertinent to his own experience and perception. This allows for exploration and communication of being that participates in and adds to the diverse history of humanity’s visual expression.
